Wheeling, VA: Published by the Author. A. & E. Picket, Print, 1831. First edition. 16mo. 178pp. Black leather spine, marbled boards (worn, loss to marbled paper on front board). Front joint split, triangular chip to spine, rear hinge cracked, browning and foxing to text. Uncommon in the trade.
Following are two catalog quotations from the same dealer. Ernie Wesson was one of the best. They show the ever evolving learning progression of a bookman: MIDLAND NOTES 40-177 - The work of a Wheeling tailor. He tells us in the preface that the DESPERADO was based on the execution of three pirates, about 1800, during his youth in Philadelphia; and 46- 166 - By the "Bard of the Panhandle", crony of William Cooper Howells; considerable local color is to be found in the poems. Quoting from the "Essay" of 1831: "The time is not far distant when Western Virginia will either liberalize the present State Government, or separate itself entirely from the Old Dominion.".
