Mansfield, OH: L.D. Myers & Brother, 1874. Second Edition, Revised. Octavo (24cm.); publisher's peach wrappers printed within double rule; 34pp. Faint contemporary institutional pressure stamp to upper cover, wrappers slightly worn and dust-soiled, else Very Good overall. Article on the trial for adultery of Henry Ward Beecher and suffragist Elizabeth Richard Tilton, first published in the "Mansfield Herald." The quality of the piece attracted enough negative attention that one reader, Robert R. Raymond, published a response in which he described Fairfield's piece as "characterized by a spirit so malign, and a literary and logical method so unscrupulous, that...I /did/ feel called to show this reckless assailant in his true colors to the world" (Raymond, "The Case of the Rev. E.B. Fairfield" (1874), p. ). (Inventory #: 48630)
