(red cloth w/white stamped lettering on front cover and spine; no dust jacket) [moderately worn book, spine slightly turned, front hinge a little weak, spine lettering mostly rubbed away, one-time owner's signature/date/town of residence on front pastedown, also a black "X" in upper corner of front pastedown]. Novel about a young couple who flee the restrictive social environment of their small town, get drunk together on the train to New York, and wake up the next morning to discover they've gotten married. Problem is, they've both made rather a big deal of not believing in marriage, so they decide to take up residence in Greenwich Village, where they can keep their marriage a secret by pretending they're just cohabiting and have a "free" relationship. .
