Using scientific disciplines, linguistics and anthropology, Gobineau offers his studies into hidden causes of revolutions, bloody wars, and lawlessness. The German journalist and historian Joachim Fest described Gobineau's work as a major influence on Adolf Hitler, despite the fact that the text explicitly criticizes anti-Semitism. Nott and Hotz were white supremacists using Gobineau's text as a justification to define African Americans as inferior beings.
