by Stolský-Svět, Fred (Metoděj Havlíček)
Ostrava: self-published (Expedice lidových romanu "Svět" M. Ostrava V.-Hulváky, 1935-36. Octavos. Original pictorial wrappers on paper of various colors; 336, 320 and 418 pp. per volume. Mostly very good; a few wrappers lightly soiled and with nicks to spine extremities. A bizarre Czech dystopia depicting an epic worldwide war, the only few survivors of which take refuge in a giant protective rubber fortress. Published as a colportage novel in bi-monthly serialized form by Havlíček (1893-1950), a Moravian journalist and writer who was traumatically wounded in WWI and went on to write numerous curious works of science fiction and speculative literature in the interwar period, all of which have yet to receive due attention. Our set lacks the final two issues, but features the striking original multi-colored wrappers, which show the author's ongoing dialogue with his readers and contain announcements of further works. Individual issues were sent to potential readers to encourage their paid subscription. Rare, with KVK and OCLC showing holdings only at the Czech National Library and Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich.
