1928 · [no place]
by Lawrence, D.H.
[no place]: Privately Printed, 1928. Pirated Edition. Very Good. An early pirated edition commonly known as the "dirty orange pirate," though in variant binding so neither orange nor dirty, unless you hold 1920s ideas of obscenity. Bound in dark green morocco-grain cloth with pale blueish green title label to spine. According to Lawrence, this pirated version appeared in London, from New York, towards the end of 1928. States one of a limited 500 copies with the author's signature forged on the limitation page. According to Jay A. Gertzman in A Descriptive Bibliography of Lady Chatterley's Lover, there is reason to believe that this piracy was published by the enigmatic New York poet Samuel Roth. Lawrence believed his signature to be forged by "the little boy of the piratical family," which was corroborated by gossip within the book-trade. Very Good. Title label chipped and toned. Toning to pages. Front and rear inner joint exposed. Gertzman 1.6.
