New York: John Lane and the Bodley Head, 1913. Octavo. Vol. I, xl, 614 pages and Vol. II, xii, 672 pages, index. A brilliant synthesis of all the forces that contributed to English patriotism from the middle ages to the 19th century. The author's opening chapter deals with the difficulty of expressing what constitutes patriotism. He goes on to explore the intricacies of English statecraft and diplomacy with the influences of commerce, church and the arts. He traces the influences of the major writers on the continent from Machiavelli, Calvin and Rousseau to the Duke of Alva and Napoleon. His mastery of the history and its attendant literature has come up with an idea of what patriotism. Bound in red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, bindings and fore-edges lightly dust soiled. A very nice set.
