Buck issued to recognize her 80th birthday. Buck (whose maiden name is Sydenstricker) was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938. She was well known for her efforts on behalf of Asian and mixed-race adoptions. "Imperial Woman" is the fictionalized biography of the last Empress in China, Ci-xi, who began as a concubine of the Xianfeng Emperor and, on his death, became the de facto head of the Qing Dynasty until her death in 1908. 8vo., imitation white leather & blue boards, stamped in gilt, top edge gilt; 376 pages.
