[New Haven: printed by Sherman Converse, 1818. Quarto bifolium, pp. 2, [2]; text in a single column beneath the running head; ink annotation on p. 2 noting two names, Benoni Upson and Royal Robbins, each from Berlin, Conn., each apparently signing up for one copy; docket on verso of integral leaf: "Prospectus of the Christian Spectator." Previous folds, very good. Benoni Upson (1750-1826), one of the subscribers, was a native of Waterbury, Conn., a graduate and fellow of Yale College, and Pastor of the First Church of Christ in Berlin. Royal Robbins (1788-1761) was likewise a minister who graduated from Yale in 1806 and was ordained June 26, 1812, colleague pastor with Rev. Dr. Upson, over the Congregational Church in Kensington, Conn. The Christian Spectator, published quarterly between 1819 and 1838 became known as the organ of the New Haven Theology associated with Nathaniel W. Taylor, Lyman Beecher, and others. With the publication of a series of articles on "regeneration" in the Christian Spectator in 1829, Taylor "completed the development of the essential features of the New Haven system" (Baird, History of the New School (Phila. 1868). Others associated with this school included Leonard Bacon, Chauncey Goodrich, and Albert Barnes. Not in American Imprints; AAS only in OCLC. (Inventory #: 57252)
