by TURNBULL, WILLIAM P.
1869. TURNBULL, WILLIAM P. The Birds of East Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Glasgow: Printed for private circulation, 1869. 8vo. vii, [2], 6-50 p. Slightly later half calf (spine and extremities very worn), internally fine. Book label of John E. Thayer, Lancaster. The scarce first book on New Jersey birds, privately printed in Glasgow for the author in an edition of 150 copies octavo and 50 copies quarto, plus an unillustrated American edition of the same year, printed in Glasgow with a Philadelphia imprint. Turnbull (1830-1871) came to America in 1850 and settled in Philadelphia, where he remained until his death. All editions of the book are very scarce, and the original bindings are fragile and have not survived well. This copy belonged to the distinguished American ornithologist John Eliot Thayer (1862-1933), of Lancaster, Massachusetts. (Inventory #: 15529)
