Los Angeles: Thomas Perry Stricker, 1933. First Edition. Bookplate. About fine barely handled copy in a very good dust jacket with some minor edge wear and a few small tears, some interior reinforcement to the interior, and a trace of dust soiling. Charles Grapewin (1869 - 1956) began his career as an aerialist and trapeze artist before he turned to acting, first on the stage, and then in motion pictures. He gained popularity in his later years, appearing in memorable roles in such films as The Petrified Forest (1936) with Leslie Howard and Humphrey Bogart, The Good Earth (1937) with Paul Muni and Louise Rainer, and They Died with Their Boots On (1941) with Errol Flynn. However, his best remembered roles were as Dorothy’s lovable Uncle Henry in the classic The Wizard of Oz (1939), the disgruntled Grandpa Joad, who refused to leave the homestead, in The Grapes of Wrath (1940), as Inspector Queen in the Ellery Queen whodunits that ran from 1940 through 1942, and as the amiable ne'er-do-well Jeeter Lester in Tobacco Road (1941).
