First published in 1831 which edition contained the earliest appearance of "Mary Had a Little Lamb," by Sarah J. Hale. With 62 songs, hymns, and ballads, including "Mary Had a Little Lamb," and "I am a Little Weaver." Includes national ballads, "a large portion of them are translated from works which were collected by the Rev. William C. Woodbridge, during a recent visit to Germany, and placed by him in the hands of the editors ... Most of them have been translated by Mr. S. F. Smith [of Andover Theological Seminary], in such a manner as to preserve the music as originally written ...
