Miscellaneous library of John Lowell, Boston philanthropist and scholar who traveled to India as a young man and after the death of his wife and children, spent the remainder of his life traveling in Europe, the Middle East and South Asia. "Mr. Lowell was a fine scholar and possessed a valuable private library. He bequeathed $250,000 for the maintenance in Boston of annual courses of free public lectures on religion, science, and the arts.
