New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, Franklin Square, 1860. First American Edition. 174, [2]pp. 8vo. Brown printed wrappers, front wrapper loose, else VG. First American Edition. 174, [2]pp. 8vo. One of two novels by Brunton, it was wildly successful and Jane Austen's family, who eventually read it with not a little bit of enjoyment, even had difficulty in locating a copy, which she found to be "an excellently-meant, elegantly-written Work", but too improbable for her tastes. Austen read it during the period she was preparing Sense & Sensibility for publication, and wrote about it again in her Plan of a Novel.
