[minimal wear to book, teensy bump to bottom rear corner; jacket is edgeworn, with about 1/4" paper loss at top of spine, minor chipping to base of spine]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "To Lum[?] Sandoz -- / With the author's / best wishes. / Eric Johnston / Dec. 16 - 1944." The then-president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce "cogently states his case for a people's capitalism with the emphasis on rugged individualism, private enterprise, and the competitive spirit." Two years after the publication of this book, he would leave the C. of C. post to become the successor to Will Hays as the head of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors Association (the name of which he immediately changed to the Motion Picture Association of America), in which capacity, under pressure from HUAC, he acquiesced to the creation of the Hollywood blacklist.
