Full original mottled calf bindings with moderate shelfwear and rubbing, especially to the spines, where some of the extensive gilt decorations is worn. Several hinges are weakened, but all boards remain firmly attached. Complete with 11 folding plates. Marbled endpapers. Previous owner's engraved armorial bookplate on the inside front cover: William Kemmis. The author (1729-1799) was one of the great natural philosophers of the 18th Century and an important experimentalist in biology, physics, chemistry, geology, etc. This study of volcanism covers Vesuvius, Stromboli and Etna.
