New York: Doubleday Doran & Co., 1937. First Signed Limited Edition. Both volumes are in fine condition in reddish cloth covered boards with gilt text stampings on the spine and gilt top edges to the text blocks. Both are small quartos of 9 1/4 by 6 1/4 inches and both volumes are in their original decorated, paper dust jackets which are in very good+ condition with a 1 inch deep chip at the upper edge of the spine area of volume I and a 1/2 inch deep chip at the lower edge of volume II and the spine areas of both are slightly tanned. Volume I contains the first trade edition version of Kenneth Robert's Northwest Passage which remained on the best seller list for many months. It is the account of the life of Major Robert Roberts (founder of Robert's Rangers) as seen through the eyes of a fictional protagonist. Volume II contains "the unique historical material on which the essential of the novel were based" to include a transcript of the courts martial trial of Major Roberts which was held in Montreal in 1768. Many of the pages in volume II remain unopened. Volume one is signed by the author on a specially tipped in page and numbered 702 out of only 1,050 copies printed. Both volumes are contained in a very good original, paper covered slip case which is rubbed at the corners and bottom side. An extremely handsome set and quite uncommon in its original dust jackets.
