by CHAGALL, Marc
1952. Color lithograph. Sheet measures 35 x 23 inches, Image measures 27 1/8 x 19 1/2 inches. Chips to margins not affecting image, some scuffing upper right. The artist's signature appears in the stone in the lower right hand side with the date of the original work. Deep tones of blue create an illuminated night scene with a full moon hanging low in the sky. The abstracted profiles of a man and woman in the left appear intimate with the woman's arms wrapped around a bouquet of bright flowers. A bowl of fruit appears as though floating in the water behind it with tiny boats and the edge of land in the distance. Created in 1952, for a solo show at the Ponchettes Gallery in Nice, France. Printed by Mourlot, Paris, this work was a collaboration between Charles Sorlier and Marc Chagall. Based on an interpretation from a gouache dating to 1949. (Inventory #: 298473)
