by Locke, David Ross writing as Petroleum V. Nasby
Boston: Lee and Shepard, 1868. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. A small card signed by David R. Locke is affixed to a prefatory blank leaf. A satire of the 1868 United States presidential election, told in a series of dispatches by fictional postmaster, ex-Confederate, and sometimes preacher Petroleum Vesuvius Nasby. The works of David R. Locke (1833-88) were favorite reading of Abraham Lincoln. The dialect letters burlesqued Copperhead attitudes and greatly appealed to the President's risibilities. Illustrated by Thomas Nast. Octavo. Original green cloth binding, with decorative gilt stamping. Occasional light soiling to the contents, which are a little shaken. Small numeric label to the top corner of the front pastedown. The front hinge is just starting and still very sound. Some general edgewear to the boards, with mild evidence of moisture.
