1880 · Philadelphia
by [PRANG LITHOS] MEEHAN, Thomas
Philadelphia: Chas. Robson & Co, 1880. First Edition. First printing. Large octavo (26cm). Publisher's pebble-grained cloth, decoratively titled in gilt on spine and front cover; blue-gray clay-coated endpapers; 204pp plus 48 leaves of chromolithographed plates (complete). About half the plates have been heightened with gum arabic. A tight, firm copy. A few plates show mild foxing at margins; offsetting to facing text leaves from most plates, as is typical for this set, which was issued without tissue guards. Five plates with evidence of old adhesions to facing text pages, the result of the plates not having cured sufficiently prior to binding; in one instance, these adhesions have resulted in damage to facing leaf, with loss of a few characters of text. The remaining plates remain vivid and clean. Plates 41 and 42 bound out of order.
The lithographs, of excellent quality, were printed by the Boston firm of Louis Prang. The full work was issued in two series, in four volumes over two years; this is the second volume of the Second Series. The first series was issued under Prang's imprint.
