Canadian auteur David Cronenberg's sixth film, completed shortly after an acrimonious divorce, following the dissolving relationship between a demonically disturbed man and his mentally ill ex-wife, who is confined in an unorthodox, controversial psychiatric institute. Although the film initially received mixed critical reception it has since been reconsidered as a cult film, notable in particular for its frank discussion of mental illness and motherhood.
