John Paddy Carstairs ”written in vintage fountain pen ink on a 4” x 3” piece of paper. the book explores his experiences in Hollywood. In addition, there are guest essays with interviews from Walt Disney on cartoons, film costumes by Adrian, an average day for star Joan Crawford, make-up by Perc Westmore, etc. Ownership inscription on pastedown and ink stain on spine cloth, else very good in a very good striking pictorial dust jacket which is a terrific depiction of Hollywood film studio scenes. John Paddy Carstairs was a British film and television director, comic novelist, and painter. He directed 37 films in total, including Spare a Copper, Dancing with Crime, Up to His Neck, Up in the World, Tommy the Toreador, Sands of the Desert, and Weekend with Lulu. He had a long association with the character of Simon Templar (the character's creator, novelist Leslie Charteris, dedicated his 1963 book, The Saint in the Sun to Carstairs). He also directing the 1939 Saint film, The Saint in London, as well as two episodes of The Saint television series in the 1960s, making him the only individual (other than Charteris himself) to be connected to both the Hollywood film and British series of The Saint. Carstairs is the author of But Wishes Aren't Horses, Movie Merry-Go-Round, No Thanks for the Shroud, Nicer to Stay in Bed,Vinegar and Brown Paper, A Novel of Pre-War London, Kimmie, Gardenias Bruise Easily, and three autobiographical works - Honest Injun, Hadn't We the Gaiety, and Kaleidoscope and a Jaundiced Eye.
