He arrived in 1831, became a Mexican citizen and was granted the 45,000 acre Rancho Agua Caliente รข Valle de San Jose in 1844. Warner's ranch was a way station for immigrants on the southern route to California. The author, Joseph H. Hill, was Associate Curator of the Bancroft Library and a distinguished scholar of the southwestern fur trade. Hill utilized the resources of the Bancroft collection as well as local archives and other repositories to write this book. Herbert Eugene Bolton (1870-1953) was a prominent California historian who wrote the Preface to this book.
