1943 · NY
by SOHN, Monte
NY: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1943. First Edition. Signed presentation from Sohn on the front endpaper: "For Guy Hodges- who, after a slight acquaintance of 25 years, still remains one of the few creative geniuses of tis life's intimate friendship. With fondest regards, Monte Sohn. December 1943." A scarce war-time book, containing amusing letters from a mother to her soldier son, revealing an abysmal ignorance about the facts of army life and of the war in general. Sohn, who lived in Hillsdale, NY at the time of his death, was the creator and designer of the famous "Elsie The Cow," used to promote the sale and drinking of milk. He wrote a number of "Elsie" books but his signature is scarce. Small 8vo., green cloth in dust jacket; 212 pages. Illustrated by Paul Brown.. Very Good (minor wear covers; contents clean & tight); moderate edgewear & little soil (few small tears repaired internally using clear, archival tape) d/j. A nice copy of a scarce book!
