Mournier (1758-1806), a politician and judge, was unanimously elected deputy of the third estate to the states general of 1789, and subsequently founded the Monarchiens party which was linked to Mirabeau and sought to strengthen royal power as the best bulwark against popular anarchy. He is credited with proposing the famous Tennis Court Oath. Octavo, two volumes in one: [2] ff., xvi-304-viii-295 p. In a 19th century blue morocco binding, with gilt and blind-stamped decorations, and marbled endpapers. Mild toning to the contents. Bookplate to the front pastedown. The spine is lightly faded, with a bit of wear to the extremities; else very good.
