first edition
1960 · New York
by Seuss, Dr
New York: Beginner Books, 1960. First edition. Very good/Very good. First edition, second issue (with 50 Word Vocabulary printed on the cover, not on a sticker). First edition with "Distributed by Random House" stated on title page and on back panel of jacket. All later printings referred to Beginner Books as a Division of Random House, not "Distributed By". Very good in a very good dust jacket with the original price (195/195) still on the front flap. Seuss wrote this book when he promised his publisher he could write a funny and charming book with only a 50 word vocabulary. It revolutionized early reader books, which until this book had been typically and humorlessly about Dick and Jane. It is now a classic, often chosen by celebrities and dignitaries when they visit kindergarten classes to read to the children.
