Widely regarded as an unconscious parody of his earlier work, this novel was based on Hemingway's experiences as a war correspondent and irregular soldier in France during World War II, and immediately preceded The Old Man and the Sea (1952), the work that led to his receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954.
