Phillips, who was born in Tottenham, North London, underwent extensive elocution lessons as a child to lose his cockney accent, and accordingly, became known in adulthood for portraying posh, upper-class characters, most notably in the "Carry On" and "Doctor in the House" film series, and the BBC comedy series "The Navy Lark."
