Volume I: xx, xxxii "A Dissertation on the Rise and Progress of the Modern Art of Navigation", 400 pages. Illustrated with figures, vignettes top of Chapter headings, and plates I-VI. Contents and errata for both volumes is located in volume 1. Volume II: [2], 392 pages, 76 pages "A Treatise of Marine Fortification." Illustrated with figures, vignettes top of Chapter headings, and plates VII-XVI. Brown leather bindings with sparse gilt decorations on the spines. Title labels missing on both volumes. Leather is damp stained on the covers. Outer joints are cracked and inner hinges are cracked. Covers loose but still firmly in place. Text and illustrations are in very good condition. Previous owner's old ink inscription written on the right front flyleaves - "Jos Gittino 1795." The standard guide book for navigation in the eighteenth century.
