XV century · [France]
Provenance: extracted from "Fifty Original Leaves from Medieval Manuscripts," a leaf book assembled in the late 1940s by the art historian Otto F. Ege. Ege, one of history's notable biblioclasts, raided his own superb collection of illuminated manuscripts to produce some 40 sets of fifty leaves each, with every leaf mounted in folding stiff paper and labeled.
The leaf offered here, #30 from the set, is a highly decorated, pleasing passage from a French Book of Hours written for personal use by a wealthy individual in the 15th century. In the original paper mask with Ege's original label. Few light mercantile pencil marks in lower right corner of mask. (Inventory #: 6542)
