A complete facsimile of Maria Sibylla Merian's groundbreaking, self-published work on the insects of Suriname. Merian (1647-1717), a German naturalist and illustrator, was the first European woman to undertake an independent scientific expedition in South America. In Metamorphosis, which she published in 1705, she classified a range of previously unknown species. Each illustration depicts an insect at multiple stages in its life cycle, interacting with local flora. 9 copies of this facsimile are recorded in OCLC.
