Denver, April 1899.. 20pp. including numerous illustrations. Quarto. Original printed self-wrappers. Evenly tanned, minor scattered staining and creasing, a few small chips to margins. Very good. April 1899 issue of THE TEXAS-COLORADO CHAUTAUQUA JOURNAL, a monthly publication dedicated to Colorado's Chautauqua movement. The Chautauqua movement was an educational and cultural movement which brought musicians, teachers, performers, and others to various locales throughout the country, generally setting up large tent complexes as a sort of season-long summer festival of culture and learning. The city of Boulder lobbied heavily to become the westernmost Chautauqua site and was eventually selected in 1898; the Colorado Chautauqua that began that summer continues in the present day as the only operating Chautauqua west of the Mississippi. The JOURNAL itself is filled with news about preparations for Boulder's second summer as host and is thoroughly illustrated with photographs of the city and its landmarks, and advertisements for lodging, tents, travel, and local attractions. An interesting remnant from a popular social movement at the turn of the 20th century.
