1834-37 · Boston
by Washington, George; Jared Sparks, and others.
Boston: American Stationers' Company, John B. Russell,, 1834-37. Poor. Volumes II-XII of the Writings of George Washington, lacking volume I, but supplemented with The Life of George Washington, which is effectively a reprint of volume one of the original set. Volumes II-XII in original publisher's boards, worn, several boards detached but all boards present. Spines missing on a majority of volumes. Occasional light foxing in text, but overall the text is very good indeed. The Life of George Washington, here substituting for volume I of the set, in red morocco over marbled boards, worn. Text is clean and solid, with occasional foxing on some plates. Offered as a complete set for purposes of reference or for rebinding. Extra shipping charges will apply at cost.
Sparks begins the preface to his Life of George Washington: "The contents of this volume are essentially the same, as those of the volume prefixed to Washington's Writings." With that initial volume of Washington's Writings missing from the set we acquired, and with Sparks' Life of Washington in hand, we thought it convenient to marry the two into a single lot that forms the complete text of the 12-volume monumental work. Given that the condition of the Writings is poor, with many spines loose and joints weak or broken, the married set is offered for the purpose of reference or for re-binding.
Extra shipping charges for this set will be applied at cost.
