Handwritten receipt for Slave labor dated May 12, 1854, paid to William B Gamble of Macon, Georgia from the Ocmulgee River steamer Charles Hartridge for hire of "Charly". 3.5" x 8" inches. Signed in ink. Hired from April 18th to May 8th for a fee of $13.30. The fact that "Charly" is given no surname on the receipt and that the payment for his work is made to a third party, his owner, implies that "Charly" was not a free man in 1854 Georgia. After becoming a royal colony, in the 1760s Georgia began importing slaves directly from Africa. About 6 years after our document, Georgia voted to secede from the Union and join the Confederate States of America on January 1861. Slavery was officially abolished by the Thirteenth Amendment, which took effect on December 18, 1865. Some toning to extremities. Handwriting legible. This document is overall in very good condition.
