This work was mockingly nicknamed "Tales of Plunder" due to its high quality and price. It includes some pieces by Walter Scott who, although not mentioned on the title page, collaborated with Lewis on this collection of ballads. "The considerable literary output of Lewis is neglected today, but his influence (truncated) upon contemporary romanticism and the catharsis which his extravagance effected upon its morbid elements cannot be overlooked" (Kunitz & Haycraft)
