The first systematic bibliography of the most important books on California history, Cowan's monumental work was originally published in 1914, appropriately as the first book to be issued by The Book Club of California. This second edition includes five times as many listings as the first. Although there have been a couple of utilitarian reprints and an edition that was additionally expanded in 1964, the 1933 edition remains the most grand. Quarto, three volumes. Original tan boards over beige linen spines, with printed paper spine labels. A typed mail quote from Dawson's Book Shop to Harold L. Leupp, Librarian at UC Berkeley, is laid in the first volume.
