Howard ‘Babe’ Lydecker (1911 - 1969) and his brother Theodore (1908 - 1990) were a special effects team in Hollywood, working primarily with Republic Pictures, long before the advent of computer generated imagery (CGI). In those early days, exciting and realistic action scenes had to be filmed in real time. Known throughout the film industry as the “Miniature Men”, they were in fact giants in their field of creating detailed scale model ships, trains, planes, and automobiles - often working on shoestring budgets to bring a film to life. Some of their best known work was in The Adventures of Captain Marvel (1941), Flame of Barbary Coast (1945), Fair Wind to Java (1953), Commander Cody: Sky Marshall of the Universe (1953), and the television series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964 - 1968) for which they won Emmy’s for their work. They were nominated for Best Visual Effects Oscars for Women in War (1940) and Flying Tigers (1943). (Inventory #: 23198E)
