KENTON HARPER (1801-1867). Kenton was an editor, plantation owner, politician and military officer. He served as a Confederate general during the Civil War. Documents. 2pg. 1864. Virginia. A partly printed Confederate States of America document certifying “that Kenton Harper has paid in at this Office Six Hundred Dollars for which amount Registered Bonds of the Confederate States of America, bearing interest from this date, at the rate of four per cent per annum, will be issued to him, under the ‘Act to reduce the currency, and to authorize a new issue of notes and bonds…’”. It is signed by a financial officer. The second document is a manuscript listing the “six per cent untaxable Bonds of the Confederate States of America…the property of Kenton Harper” and then lists $10,000 worth of bonds; none of these were redeemable after the Confederacy fell, wiping out a significant portion of his net worth.
