1920 · n. p.
by Scott, Janet Laura
n. p.: n. p., 1920. Near fine.. Original ink and watercolor drawing by notable Volland illustrator Janet Laura Scott, displaying her particular Art Deco flair. This beautiful piece from an unknown work is a stylish snapshot of Janet Laura Scott's talent that made her one of Volland's go-to illustrators during the Jazz Age. In this striking black-and-white ink and watercolor drawing, a little girl in a thick kimono marvels as a candle goes out in a curling wisp of smoke; the high-contrast composition paired with elements of japonisme are characteristic of Scott's aesthetic. Looking at the figure closely reveals partially-erased pencil lines, throwing additional light on her artistic process. 16'' x 11.25'' (paper); 20'' x 15'' (mat). Original black-and-white ink and watercolor drawing on paper. Signed by Scott to lower left corner. Hinged onto white backing board, with black mat. Mat with a touch of edgewear, tiny scuff. Very faint pink (chalk?) line to figure. Sharp.
