by REVILLE, Albert (1826-1906).
Paris:: G. Fischbacher, 1881., 1881. 8vo. [3], III, 319, [1, 4] pp. Original printed wrappers; spine quite worn. Good. This is the author's history of ancient, "primitive", religions, which is divided into two parts. The second section is topical: myths, Symbols in Rites, Sacrifices, priesthood, morals, art, civilization, science, etc. Albert Reville, professor of the College de France, was a distinguished French Protestant theologian, known for his 'extremist' liberal views. He is also known for being one of the first "intellectuals" to join the Dreyfusard cause when the Dreyfus Affair erupted in the 1890s. He was a prolific writer on the comparative history of world religions. In addition to the history of Christianity, he published on the native religions of Central America (about which he gave the 1884 Hibbert Lectures), Chinese religion and the history of the idea of the Devil.
