One of numerous contemporary treatises built on the therapeutic techniques developed by the Swedish obstetrician Thure Brandt (1819-1895). The Brandt Technique, still in (modified) usage, employed massage, stretching, and exercise both to aid in childbirth and as therapy for various female genital and gynaecological conditions. The current work, compiled by the French obstetrician Horace Stapfer (1848-1913) is extensively illustrated - though, for decency's sake, the external manipulations are demonstrated on male subjects - and includes, as its concluding section, a full translation of Brandt's Traitement des Maladies des Femmes (originally Behandlung weiblicher Geschlechtskrankheiten, Berlin:1893). A handsome copy of a somewhat uncommon work. (Inventory #: 58349)
