Clifford on the front flyleaf, with the carbon copy of a typed letter from Clifford to Florence Fernald laid in. "Fernald was a prominent pioneer and cultural leader of Santa Barbara County, California, during the latter-half of the nineteenth century. He was a miner in the California gold rush, a self-taught lawyer, member of the California Bar at age twenty-two, and by age twenty-three had been sheriff, district attorney, and judge of Santa Barbara County." Prospectus laid in. Octavo: 268 p. with a frontispiece portrait and six illustrations. Original blue cloth binding, with gilt titles. Light wear to the corners and tips. The dust jacket is somewhat edgeworn, with a closed tear along the front fold that has been mended with archival tape on the verso; otherwise very good. Clark and Brunet 90.
