In the book's introduction, Sendak sets forth the background of the book and his involvement in the reworking of the Nutcracker ballet with Kent Stowell of the Pacific Northwest Ballet company. More closely following the 1816 short story by E.T.A. Hoffman, and Tchaikovsky's dramatic music interpretation, a new ballet was born, and from the ballet, a lavishly illustrated book.
