This copy inscribed by Levis to Merker: "Oct. 1, 1991 Iowa City. This book is for Kim, with great gratitude for putting my very mortal poems in The Afterlife into your imperishable form, with which it won the 1976 Lamont. Larry." The reference is to the Lamont Poetry Award which Levis won with The Afterlife, a book printed by Merker. This was Levis's last book published during his lifetime. He died of a coke overdose in 1996.
