The author was a financier and philanthropist; his father co-founded the Wrigley and Harkness Company and was a major investor in the Standard Oil Company. William Hale Harkness graduated from Yale (truncated) in 1922 and received a Harvard law degree in 1925. A member of numerous clubs and organizations, he was at one time vice president of the American Geographical Society and the Boys Club of New York.
