Original cloth binding with gilt-stamped lettering on the front cover. The spine is faded from sun exposure, and the binding has minor shelfwear. The frontispiece is a photographic print of the Iron and Steel Works. Company information sheet is neatly affixed to the inside front cover. The text is clean and unmarked. First edition. Fairbairn (1789-1874) was a Scottish civil engineer who entered business in Manchester, England, in 1817. He constructed the first iron ship in England and afterward his firm built over 100 iron vessels. He was associated with Robert Stephenson in designing and building the great tubular bridge over Menai Strait.. (Inventory #: 019991)
