Artwork and Prints for Some Pond Bureau or J. B. Pond Lyceum Bureau Lecturers and other Performers

Good. Seventy+ pieces. Mostly artwork for broadside promotional items for appearances by various lecturers, performers, etc. Many of the largest (which a quite a few) are around 38 x 50 cm. Others are quite a bit smaller. Some are the finished or partially finished printed posters or promotional items. Finished prints are often smaller than the artwork from which they were produced. We suspect that these prints may sometimes have been used as the first page of a four-page brochure or a broadsheet. While none or almost none of the artwork or prints are dated at to year, these are generally from the 1920s or 1930s with a few perhaps earlier or later. There (truncated) is a fair amount of soiling, edge chippings, creasing, etc. but overall most items are in Good or better condition. These came to us a few years ago from the basement of a deceased bookseller with no accompanying information about the source of this material. Major James B. Pond, a Union Civil War Medal of Honor solidier, began managing speakers in 1874. His lecturers and entertainers included Samuel Clemens and Frederick Douglass. Major Pond died in 1903, James B. Pond, Jr., his son, took over the Pond Lyceum business and represented a wide range of speakers and other entertainers, apparently up into the 1940s.
