Camoens (or Camões, c.1524-80) was Portugal’s great national poet, author of the epic poem Os Lusíadas (or The Lusiads, 1572), which describes Vasco da Gama’s discovery of the sea route to India. Camões had a permanent and unparalleled impact on Portuguese and Brazilian literature alike, due to not only his epic but also his posthumously published lyric poetry. 12mo: 157, [1, blank], [2, ads] pp, with a frontispiece portrait. Original cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titles and blind-stamped decorations and borders.
