[East] Berlin: Verlag der Nation, 1982. Hans-Eberhard Ernst. Small 8vo, pp. 157. In German. Twenty full-page b/w illustrations, probably after linoleum cuts. Cream-colored cloth, stamped in black. A nice copy in little chipped dj. A novel based on the life of an important German poet, Annette von Droste-Hulshoff (1797-1848). She grew up in the castle Hulshoff, near Munster, in an aristocratic and strict Catholic family, and this novel describes her love for the 17-year younger Levin Schucking, who became known as a newspaper editor and author of historical novels. He wrote the "biogrsaphical" Anette (1882) which throws some light on his relationship to her, and also edited her collected works in 1878. The present novel relies heavily on the Droste-Hulschoff and Schucking correspondence and his autobiography. Droste-Hulshoff is still considered a major writer today, especially for her atmospheric landscape poems and her masterly detective novel, Die Judenbuche. Friederich Engels recognized her talent, and for that reason her life could become the subject of a novel in East Germany. (Inventory #: 30475)
