THE TRIAL OF ALEXANDER ADDISON, ESQ. PRESIDENT OF THE COURTS OF COMMON PLEAS...ON AN IMPEACHMENT, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, BEFORE THE SENATE OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA
1803 · Lancaster
by Lloyd, Thomas [Reporter]
Lancaster: Printed by George Helmbold, Junior, for Lloyd and Helmbold, Jun., 1803. [1]-115, [1 blank], 101-154, 14 pp [as issued]. Contemporary calf [rubbed, heavily chipped at spine] with 'House of Representatives' stamped in gilt on the front cover. Scattered light foxing. Very Good.
Addison, a Pennsylvania Federalist, was presiding judge of its Court of Common Pleas. He had defended the Alien and Sedition Acts and severely criticized the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions. The Jeffersonians got their revenge after they assumed power in Pennsylvania. His impeachment and removal from office became the model for a wave of similar actions against both federal and state judges. "Throughout America the bar was a sort of aristocracy, conservative to a degree that annoyed reformers of every class." I Adams History of the U.S. 433. This is the second edition; it includes, not only the trial with much material on the nature of impeachment and Addison's lengthy justifications of his conduct, but also an Appendix which collects material on impeachment, absent from the first edition [which was also published in 1803].
Sabin 381. AI 3631 [2]. II Harv. Law Cat. 999. Marvin 472. (Inventory #: 24893)
